I work with couples or single travelers looking for a quiet, personal, and fully catered guided experience in Southern Africa.
To be honest, I don't do well in large groups; I prefer to have personal interactions with one or two people around a fire. I have tailored my guided trips around what I am good at, and it's working with couples, giving them space and having meaningful, human relationships with them. No one trip can ever be the same as we play off each other's energy.
I grew up on a farm close to Zimbabwe in the north of South Africa. It had made a huge impression on me my whole life. I was fortunate to have the space to explore on a farm in the Bushveld. My parents instilled a love of traveling and nature in my two brothers and me from our very beginnings.
Growing up, I have always been curious. I think this translated to exploring as an adult. I have at times felt I was born in the wrong century, having dreams of being an early explorer in Africa. My dream as a boy of 6 was to be a game ranger in the Kruger National Park and own my own 4x4.
My life took some weird turns, but between becoming a software engineer and quitting that life at the age of 28, I pursued my childhood dream and became a "game ranger" when I was 30. As a conservation student, I worked in the Kruger National Park, Addo Elephant Park, and in other national parks in KwaZulu Natal. I left my full-time job at 28 and completed my National Diploma in Nature Conservation in 2015. After this, I started working as a Rhino monitor for Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
Those were my best times, stalking black and white rhino, pretending to be an African explorer, sweat burning my eyes, heart pounding. I became involved with anti-poaching efforts by developing and employing technology that helped prevent wildlife crime in South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique.
I received and hosted numerous donors and technical experts from different continents not familiar with our African bush. I have always been very aware of the fact that some of these people have never been to Africa. They have never seen an Elephant or Giraffe in real life. It fascinated me, and I really tried to imagine how wonderful it must be to see those animals at an older age. I still find so much beauty in that first experience through people who have never experienced Africa as I have. I strive to never take this for granted.
I share my personal stories with you because my trips are personal and intimate in a sense. I want to work with people who enjoy the quiet humming of nature. I want to show you "my" amazing country and continent. I want to share with you the awe and humbling power of nature. I wish for you to feel the overwhelming love I have for this earth.
My name is Herman, my family and I live on a quiet farm in the Western Cape of South Africa and I wish to guide you :-)
Each trip is unique, and is planned around your needs and how I think I can best meet those. I don't have fixed itineraries, I just don't believe in that. Your trip is tailor-made. Most trips last about a week, but can be shorter or longer.
My trips are fully catered, you can really just sit back and relax. If you want to drive your own, that can be arranged with a kitted rental 4x4.
Usually the days of driving are not too long. I like to get to camp around lunchtime, there is no need to rush it.
We usually wild camp and are fully self-reliant. Most camps are in the wild with no power. Again, this can be tailored to your needs and required comfort.
I love cooking, especially on a wood fire. Whatever your dietary preference is, I will cook it on the fire, you sit back and relax. Drinks will be served cold or hot.
I am driving a Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 diesel in double cab. It is a capable, reliable workhorse. It is fully kitted with auxiliary power, lights, fridge and oven and a roof tent for my client(s). We have a full recovery kit onboard should we get into some fun situations.
